MC4 Guide solar connectors, plainly explained

MC4 connectors, explained without the jargon.

Practical guides for off-grid solar DIYers, van & RV builders, and small-batch buyers: how MC4 connectors work, how to size your cable, how to crimp properly, and how to avoid the mistakes that cause hot plugs and dead strings.

Who this site is for

All guides are free for everyone. On the supply side, we focus on one niche: small-batch and recurring orders.

Off-grid & DIY builders

Cabin, shed, homestead and standalone battery systems that never touch the grid — sized in the dozens of connectors, not hundreds.

Installers & workshops

Small installation businesses that buy monthly, not by tender. Same crimp spec and labeling on every repeat order.

Resellers & kit makers

Solar kit assemblers and online sellers who need pre-crimped MC4 cable assemblies in consistent lengths, packed per kit.

One honest note: if you need a single pair of connectors for a weekend project, your local store or a marketplace is faster and cheaper for you — no hard feelings. We're set up for orders from around 50 pieces / cable by the roll, where factory-direct pricing and consistent crimping actually matter.

Quick answers

What does "MC4" actually stand for?

Multi-Contact, 4 mm — the 4 mm contact pin designed by Multi-Contact AG of Switzerland, now Stäubli Electrical Connectors. It became the de-facto standard PV connector; most connectors sold today are "MC4-compatible" clones. Full answer →

Can I plug an MC4 from one brand into another brand's MC4?

It will click together, but no manufacturer rates cross-brand mating, and codes like NEC 690.33(C) require connectors of the same type and manufacturer (or explicitly listed for cross-mating). Mixed pairs run hotter and lose certification. Full answer →

What wire gauge should I use with MC4 connectors?

Most small off-grid builds use 12 AWG (4 mm²) or 10 AWG (6 mm²) PV wire. The right answer depends on string current, run length and system voltage — the guide walks through both ampacity and voltage drop with a worked example. Full answer →

Do you sell to individuals, or only companies?

Both. What matters to us is the batch size, not your paperwork: DIYers building a bigger system, workshops and resellers are all welcome from roughly 50 pieces / one roll of cable upward. Get a quote →

Need MC4 cable assemblies in small batches?

Factory-direct MC4 pairs, extensions and pre-crimped leads — quoted by an engineer, not a quote portal. Typical reply: one business day.
